Irish language Policy

 AN GHAEILGE

  1. Irish is the language of instruction and the language of communication amongst teachers, children, management and parents / guardians (where possible) in Gaelscoil Thaobh na Coille.
  2. Irish is a living language within the classroom and without, in the schoolyard, and in the vicinity of the school.
  3. Irish is the language of communication at social functions, sporting and drama occasions and any other activity where we are present as a school.
  4. All children are welcome in our school irrespective of linguistic background. Irish is the only     language spoken to the child when he/she comes to school for the first time and there on after. We use the early total immersion method of language acquisition and English is not taught until senior infants.
  5. We ask parents and everyone who is involved with the school to help us as we strive to create our own ‘Gaeltacht’ in the school and in our locality.
  6. We would encourage the use of Irish at home whenever possible – it doesn’t matter if it only includes a ‘cúpla focal’, short phrases or the odd sentence here and there. A positive attitude towards Irish in the home as well as in school, is of great help to us and to the child attending our school.
  7. If a parent / guardian wishes to speak with the class teacher during class time, we ask that they to do so “as Gaelige”.

The Aims of the School

In Gaelscoil Thaobh na Coille we aim to do our utmost to provide an excellent education through the medium of Irish. We strive to cultivate a positive attitude and love of the Irish language and culture, in the pupils. If the school is to achieve these goals, it is important that there is an effective structure in place, which will promote positive behaviour/outlook and discourage bad behaviour. To achieve this, we place more emphasis on diligence than unruliness. Having said that, it is often necessary to implement a standard of behaviour conducive to fostering and nurturing the goodwill and good disposition of pupils and thus discourage misbehaviour on the part of any pupil so inclined. The teachers certainly understand that no two children are alike and therefore discretion has to be used from time to time.
