Craobh IománaíochtaHurling final

Ag tús comórtas Chorn Uí Néill ní rabhamar ag súil go n-éireodh leis an bhfoireann scoile s’againne dul chomh fada leis an gcraobh. Toisc gur comórtas sóisir atá ann is as rang a cúig a tháinig formhór na h-imreoirí a bhíonn sa léig seo de gnáth agus níl againne i R5 i nGaelscoil Thaobh na Coille ach dechniúr buachaill i mbliana ( ochtar a imríonn iománaíocht). Bhí grúpa beag iománaithe ó rang 6 in ann imirt ar an bhfoireann mar go raibh siad óg ach bhí an chuid eile den fhoireann déanta suas de dhaltaí ó rang a ceathair. Ach mar a deir an seanfhocal ‘ní mar a shíltear a bhítear’!#

Sa chéad cluiche léige i gcoinne Bunscoil Divine Word thosaigh an foireann go mall ach ar deiredh bhí bua éasca go maith acu. Bhí go leor comharthaí dearfacha le feiceáil agus ba léir go raibh spiorad láidir i measc na n-imreoirí. D’imigh an léig ar aghaidh agus bhí feabhas suntasach le feiceáil le gach cluiche. Bhí na tacaithe ag obair mar aonad le Fiachra ó Súilleabháin agus Daniel Mac Eoin ag tabhairt spreagadh do na h-imreoirí timpeall orthu ar an bpáirc. Bhí na tosaithe ag scóráil níos rialta agus bhí an grúpa iománaithe seo ag breathnú níos mó agus níos mó mar fhoireann.

Is sa chluiche deirneach léige i gcoinne Bunscoil Naomh Attracta gur thaispeáin an fhoireann seo céard a bhí iontu mar iománaithe agus mar dhaoine. Thaispeáin siad fíor bhród i ngeansaí na scoile nuair a tháinig siad ar ais ag deireadh an chluiche le comhscór a fháil. Chinntigh sé seo go raibh siad sa chéad áit sa léig agus go mbeadh an cluiche leath chraobha níos éascaí acu. Bhuaigh siad an cluiche sin i gcoinne Scoil Naomh Mhuire as Tamhlacht le scór mór agus bhí an craobh sroichte acu. Bhí na páistí tar éis traenáil go crua agus obair go crua le lá mór a bheith acu i bPáirc an Chrócaigh. Níl aon dabht ach go raibh an lá seo tuilte ag gach uile imreoir as an gceathrar is fiche a bhí ar an bpainéal.

Bhí cluiche den scoth ann sa chraobh i gcoinne Scoil Naomh Attracta. Chuir gach imreoir 100% iarrachta agus níos mó isteach. Thaispeáin na páistí an spiorad a bhí iontu ós comhair an lucht leanúna íontach a bhí ann idir pháistí, tuismitheoirí agus múinteoirí ón scoil. Sa deireadh ní raibh ach pointe amháin idir an dá fhoireann tar éis am bhreise. Cé gur chaill foireann na scoile an chluiche bhí siad in ann siúl isteach sa seomra gléasta ina dhiaidh le deora sna súile ach leis na cloigeanacha go h-ard san aer. Bhí a fhios acu go raibh siad i ndiaidh gach uile braon fuinnimhe a fhágáil ar an bpáirc.

Tá na páistí ar fad ó uimhir a 1 go 24 le moladh go h-ard agus tá mé cinnte go mbeidh roinnt acu le feiceáil amach anseo ag caitheamh geansaí iománaíochta Bhaile Átha Cliath. Ba phléisiúr é a bheith bainteach leis an ngrúpa páistí seo.

At the beginning of the hurling season we did not envisage this team reaching the heights that they did. This was due to the fact that in the junior competition the majority of the hurlers are generally drawn from fifth class and there are only ten boys in fifth class this year of which only eight are hurlers. The rest of the panel was made up of children from fourth class and a small selection of children from sixth class who fulfilled the age requirement for the competition. However, all was not as it seemed!

In the first league match against Divine Word N.S the team started quite slowly but finished the game with a surprisingly facile victory. There were many positive aspects to the team’s performance that day, the most encouraging being the strong team spirit shown by this group of players. As the league progressed, the team were improving in every facet of their play. In defence they began to play more as a unit with Fiachra Ó Suilleabháin and Daniel Mac Eoin giving great encouragement and advice to their defensive colleagues. In attack they began to take their chances more frequently. They were increasingly looking like a force to be reckoned with.

It wasn’t until their final league game against St Attractas N.S that this team revealed their potential as hurlers and as individuals. They showed great pride in the school jersey to grab a draw from the jaws of defeat with a last minute score. This ensured that they topped the league and therefore would have the easier of the semi final matches. As expected, they won the semi final against St Mary’s N.S from Tallaght, winning by a big score line. Gaelscoil Thaobh na Coille were back in Croke Park and more importantly back in a final. The 24 players on the panel had trained hard and fully deserved their place in the final of Corn Uí Néill.

The final against our now arch rivals, St Attracta’s N.S, turned out to be a classic. Every player gave 100% on the day. The team displayed a ‘never say die’ attitude in front of a significant support which included piers, teachers and parents. In the end they were defeated by the slimmest of margins after extra time. However, even in defeat this group of players were entitled to walk teary eyed but proud back to the dressing room at Croke Park that morning. Each and every one of them could be proud of the fact that they had expended every ounce of energy during a heroic performance.

Each player from number 1 to 24 deserves great praise and I have no doubt but that we will see some of them hurling for Dublin in future years. It has been a great honour to be involved with this group of children.
