1916 The National Flag

27 Samhain 2015

The National Flag Initiative for Primary Schools 2016 : To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Government tasked Óglaigh na hÉireann with delivering a National Flag to every Primary School in the country. This is a key part of the Ireland 2016 commemorative programme.

Two members of Óglaigh na hÉireann, Lieutenant  Antaine Ó Beoláin and SS Cuilleann Ní Charmadaí visited the school, in uniform, on Friday the 27th of November and formally presented the National Flag to Ellie Ní Chuinneagáin R6 (the eldest pupil in the school) as a representative of the school in a special ceremony that was held in the school. They taught the pupils about how the National Flag should be cared for and the protocol that surrounds this vibrant symbol of our nation.

Lieutenant  Antaine Ó Beoláin then read out the proclamation, ably assisted by Jack Ó Grádaigh R6 who read out the 4th paragraph of the proclamation and he then presented the school with a copy of the proclamation.

This initiative will culminate in Proclamation Day on 15th of March 2016, where every school will raise the National Flag in special ceremonies and the 1916 Proclamation will be read.
