The Green Flag

After two years of hard work, the school was presented with its first green flag on Tuesday the 21st of May at a ceremony in Croke Park. Three members of An Coiste Glas, Emma Nic Gabhann (R6), Tadhg Ó Ruairc (R6) & Páraic Mac Lochlainn (R5) were present to collect the flag.

The flag was presented for the work done in the school in the area of ‘Litter and Waste’. The school has significantly decreased the volume of rubbish it sends to landfill through increased recycling and composting. The motto composed by the Coiste Glas is “Úsáid arís bí ar bís!” (Reuse and be happy!). We hope the good habits learnt at school are also being implemented at home!

The Green Flag was officially raised in the front clós of the school at 11:45am on Thursday 23rd of May.

The well known biologist, nature expert and regular contributor to the Mooney Show Éanna Ní Lamhna was in attendance to raise the flag. Éanna Ní Lamhna visited the senior infant and first class classrooms to talk about nature and the environment before joining the rest of the school in the hall for a short ‘Green Flag’ ceremony.

R5 & R6 started the proceedings with two beautiful and fitting songs ‘Colours of the Wind’ and ‘Coiméad Taobh na Coille Glan’  to be followed by the ‘Grúpa Ceoil’ who played a few tunes for us.

An Múinteoir Chambers spoke about the work carried out by the Coiste Glas over the previous year and he thanked the members of the Coiste Glas for all their hard work.  Éanna Ní Lamhna then took to the stage and spoke briefly about protecting the environment before going outside to raise the Green Flag.

We were all delighted to see our Green Flag billowing in the wind next to our National Flag and our School Flag.
